Embracing Equity, Promoting Equality: Reflections on International Women's Day 2023

On March 12, 2023, Impact Hub Dhaka organized a community event titled “Embracing Equity, Promoting Equality:

Our Path Forward” in honor of International Women’s Day. Co-hosted with YY Ventures, the event was facilitated by Tasaffy Hossain, Founder & Managing Partner of Bonhishikha, where participants shared their stories and perspectives on how to create a world where everyone can thrive.

We began the discussion by testing the participants' knowledge of milestones in women's history through a pop quiz facilitated by Lamia Hafiz, Community Lead at Impact Hub Dhaka. She then invited Tasaffy on stage who asked participants to reflect on their own identities and how they differ from others, encouraging them to share their thoughts on equity and equality.

The discussion progressed towards the role of power dynamics and its impact. Participants highlighted how older people may not welcome ideas from younger people, stereotyping them as having less wisdom and experience. Additionally, issues such as mindset differences, language barriers, and introversion were identified as barriers to open conversations.

The conversation then moved towards creating equitable workspaces and where it should start. Tasaffy emphasized the importance of creating new habits and culture, which involves breaking old habits and culture. She suggested that people in leadership roles in organizations, governments, laws and legislations, education systems, and family values play a crucial role in creating equitable workspaces.

The discussion also highlighted socio-religious barriers that hinder achieving equity, such as capitalism, lack of representation and participation, and the expectation of perfection especially from women.

In conclusion, the session provided a space for participants to discuss equity and equality and reflect on the issues that limit us in achieving it. The session emphasized the importance of creating equitable workspaces and the need for leaders, governments, laws, education systems, and families to play an active role in achieving equity. The event was a call to action for everyone to foster conversations and make efforts to create a more equitable and just society.
